During a routine inspection

The home had created a friendly, lively and welcoming atmosphere. We saw numerous visitors, volunteers and people living in the home coming and going throughout the day. People living there told us they could choose how to spend their time. One person said, 'I have my own routine and staff know it. I sometimes surprise them by changing my mind but we have a laugh about it and they always support me in anyway I want.'

We observed that staff had well developed skills in engaging with people. This meant that people were stimulated and alert, frequently having conversation with each other and with staff. People told us they had been involved in making decisions about all aspects of their care and in the details of their care plan.

One person said, 'It's the best decision I made coming to live here. The staff have been brilliant at helping me to settle, and have gone the extra mile to make my room look nice.'

We found the service to be appropriately staffed for the needs of the people living in the home. The staff team were experienced and well trained with specialist skills in caring for people with dementia.

The home had recently had a fire and the provider and staff in the home had acted quickly to repair the damage and to minimise the impact for people living in the home. We found that procedures were correctly followed and emergency plans put into place so that all residents' were safely evacuated from the building.

During a routine inspection

People who lived in Powbeck House were satisfied with the respectful and dignified care they received. We saw kind and caring interactions on the day of our visit.

People told us:

"The staff are all very decent...and I am well looked after...I am very happy and have nothing to complaint about".

"I liked it here right away...wanted to stay after the first day. I think the staff are great...really kind."

We saw that staff helped people to get good personal and health care and that staff treated people with respect and sensitivity.

We looked at how medication was managed in the service. We found that all the systems were in order and medicines were managed safely.

People told us there were enough staff around to care for them.

"The staff work very hard but they have time for us...the house is clean and we are well fed and well looked after".

We checked on rostered hours and the needs of people in the service. We judged that staffing levels were suitable and could meet the needs of the people in residence. We had evidence to show that staff were experienced and suitably trained to undertake their role.

Cumbria Care had suitable systems in place to check that good standards of care and services were always achieved in the home. We looked at some of the quality checks in the service and judged that quality was monitored carefully so that people were being cared for and supported appropriately.
