During a routine inspection

As part of this follow-up inspection we spoke with three out of four people who used the service, four members of staff, including the home manager. We also spoke with their line manager who visited the home during our inspection.

We found that since the last inspection the provider has ensured that staff had received training in Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. We also found the provider had taken appropriate action to show how the decision had been reached and who was involved in making the decision about the use of bedrails for one of the people using the service.

People were cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard. The provider has ensured that staff had received training relevant to their roles.

Following our first visit we received some anonymous information of concern in relation to activities offered to one person who uses the service, food provided in the home, the premises and staff working in the home.

We did not find any evidence to validate any of these claims. More information can be found in the main body of the report.

During a routine inspection

People told us that they liked living at Lotus Lodge. One person told us 'I do like it here." Another smiled and indicated with a thumbs up sign to say he liked the home. A relative told us 'he seems happy now, is always clean, his personal needs are well looked after.' However another relative said "he has been there for a long time and he is just there watching TV. There are not many activities." Staff were caring and supportive to people. People's privacy and dignity were respected and their views and experiences were taken into account in the way the service was delivered in relation to their care. Care was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plan because peoples' needs were fully assessed. Staff were adequately supported and supervised by the manager.

However, we found that where people did not have the capacity to consent, the provider had not acted in accordance with appropriate guidance on consent. The provider did not have suitable arrangements in place to ensure that staff received appropriate training. This meant that people's needs were not always met by staff who were sufficiently trained to carry out their role.
