There should be enough members of staff to keep people safe and meet their health and welfare needs (outcome 13)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by sufficient numbers of appropriate staff.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, reviewed information sent to us by other organisations, carried out a visit on 22 October 2012 and observed how people were being cared for. We checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care, talked with carers and / or family members, talked with staff and talked with stakeholders.

Our judgement

The staffing levels being deployed at the home were sufficient to meet the needs of the people in their care.

Reasons for our judgement

We looked at the homes duty rota, observed care practices and spoke to people being supported. These confirmed staffing levels were sufficient for the number of people living in the home. We saw staff were able to provide personal care in a timely unhurried way. We observed that people were happy with the care and support they were receiving. We saw staff members were responsive to the needs of the people they were supporting and were kind and patient.

The staff members we spoke with said they were clear about their role and felt they worked well as a team. They told us they were happy with the staffing levels being deployed. They told us they had enough time to undertake tasks with the people in their care. They said they never felt hurried or under pressure to complete their duties.
