All Inspections

30 January 2014

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because some of the people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences.

We spoke with seven people who used the service, observed care delivery and checked care plans. We spoke with the manager and home owner (provider), two care staff and the housekeeper.

Three people who used the service were able to tell us they were happy and felt safe at Bluebell Lodge. All of these people told us they were happy with the care they received. One person said, "I find the staff here to be marvellous." Another person told us, "They (staff) are really helpful, I feel safe here."

We saw feedback letters from relatives reflecting that staff showed them kindness, communicated changes quickly and 'always have time to chat to relatives'.

We found that people who used the service were safe because their individual needs were assessed regularly and a care plan was in place that ensured staff knew how to manage the risks identified. This ensured people experienced effective, safe and appropriate care.

We found the service was well managed. We observed how people who used the service were supported by a caring and knowledgeable staff team because the manager and the provider had ensured the staff were properly trained and supervised. They had ensured that there were systems in place to minimise infection and provide a clean, safe and hygienic environment.

People who used the service received their medicines safely by staff that were trained to administer medicines safely.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people who used the service, because they had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. We spoke with the provider, the manager and four staff. We looked at the care plans and care records for four people. We also observed how people using the service were being supported.

We spoke with a person who used the service, this person told us, 'I am well looked after here, I have no concerns and I feel very safe here.'

We saw how people using the service were consulted about their care and treatment. Where these people were unable make their own decisions we saw that the staff consulted with their relatives or advocates.

People using the service were receiving care that was centred on them as an individual and staff had considered how to maintain their dignity when carrying out personal care and support.

The provider was monitoring the quality of the service provided and people who used the service were consulted about their satisfaction with the services provided.

During an inspection in response to concerns

On the day of the inspection visit there were thirty two people living at Bluebell Lodge.

We spoke with two people who live at Bluebell Lodge. Both people said they were happy living at the care home and they said: 'The staff are marvellous.' 'I'm really well looked after here.'

We asked if people felt safe living at the care home, and they said that they did. We also asked if the staff were kind, and again we were told that the staff were: 'Lovely and smashing.'

We also spoke with a relative, who told us that they were very happy with the care that their relative was receiving. They told us: 'I'm quite happy and my mum is quite happy too.' In relation to the staff we were told: 'They are lovely, very, very nice, nothing is too much trouble, and we only have to ask.'
