We spoke with 42 people who had experience of Marie Curie Nursing and Domiciliary Care Services, 6 were people currently using the service, and 36 were close relatives of people who had received the service from MCNS.

People's views and experiences were taken into account in the way the service was provided and delivered in relation to their care. Care and treatment was planned and delivered in a way that was intended to ensure people's safety and welfare. MCNS staff worked closely with statutory services in order to deliver appropriate care to people in their own homes.

A person caring for their terminally ill parent said "I am very happy with the way they look after my mother, the first night's sleep I've had in weeks."

A person who was cared for by their spouse said "I am extremely pleased with the way the nurses look after me. They are very professional. My wife is not a patient, but the nurses also give her some help because she is so weary caring for me."

A district nurse told us, 'I have worked closely with MCNS staff for many years, I find staff from MCNS particularly good in their roles, they all seem so capable and competent, they adapt to each individual situation appropriately and provide the emotional and practical support people require."

Marie Curie Nursing Services (MCNS) wrote to patients and their relatives nationwide to request their consent to interviews with the Care Quality Commission. We spoke with the relative and carers of nine patients. We reviewed the quality assurance monitoring reports and saw the comments and responses from patients and their relatives.

The relatives of people who used the service were very complimentary about the service received. They told of the effort made by MCNS to ensure people got the support needed to spend their final days in a place of their choosing surrounded by family and friends.

People praised the qualities of staff that came to their homes, they found them compassionate and sensitive. A person said, 'my partner was lovingly cared for at home in the last weeks of life by highly skilled staff from Marie Curie Nursing services, we trusted and valued their contribution and felt reassured by their presence".

Another person spoke of the impact of the service on their life and said; 'It's not like having a stranger in your home, staff are like family members, they read the situation, they are adaptable and professional and say the right words when needed, they helped me through the darkest days".

During a routine inspection

Marie Curie Nursing Services wrote to patients and their relatives nationwide to request their consent to telephone interviews with the Care Quality Commission.

Patients were unable to speak with us themselves so we spoke with the relative and carers of three of the patients instead.

We reviewed the responses to independent surveys undertaken in the past twelve months, the quality assurance monitoring reports, and the large volume of compliments received at the headquarters.

We heard from people of the help and support they received to care for unwell relatives. They described as excellent the emotional and practical support received from nurses and healthcare assistants supplied by Marie Curie Nursing Services.

A relative described how much she valued the companionship and emotional support received from the Marie Curie nurse that came three nights a week to her home. She said, "I looked forward to her visits and appreciate the help".

A person spoken with told us that she was the sole carer for her husband who had a chronic illness, she said, " I was unable to rest at night as I was worried about my husband deteriorating, when we were assigned a Marie Curie nurse it was a bonus, I felt reassured as I knew he was in safe hands all night".

District nurses found that Marie Curie Nursing staff were expert at supporting the needs of both the person who was unwell and the people close to them. They helped them to cope with the emotional impact of their illness.

A district nurse described her experience, ''Over the last 20 years of working in the community I have only experienced an excellent and supportive gold standard service. The Marie Curie staff have always carried out their role in a professional manner with the patient and family's interests central to the care they provide".
