During an inspection looking at part of the service

Prior to this review we had visited the home on 15 August 2011 to assess compliance. During that review we found that the service had not complied with outcome seven, safeguarding people who use services from abuse and outcome 16, quality and monitoring of the service. We had also discussed some improvements to ensure maintenance of compliance with outcome four, care and welfare of people who use services.

Since our last visit the provider has sent us an improvement plan informing us how the service intended to ensure it was compliant with these outcome areas and provided a safe service for the people using it.

During this visit people told us they were happy with the service they received. We observed people engaging with the staff team supporting them and being encouraged to participate in daily routines in the home.

People told us they felt safe at the home and that they knew who to go to if they had any concerns. People could identify their named key worker and confirmed that they met with them to talk about things regularly.

We saw that systems had been developed to monitor the quality of service and support provided. Management at the home spoke with us about proposals to change the purpose of the service, that had been shared with people using the service, their relatives and supporters and staff. People using the service confirmed they had been consulted.

People said they were happy with the the things provided for them such as recreational and occupational opportunities. One person said, "I love Stoke City Football club and staff take me to the matches." Another person had recently been successful in obtaining some voluntary work and was looking forward to the experience, "I hope they like me so I can do more."

Two people confirmed that the staff team were supportive and listened to them, "Staff talk to me about the things I want to do." "I'm happy here but I can tell staff if I'm not."

We observed people who use the service engaging well with staff and each other. Interactions between staff and people were appropriate and positive.

People told us they had their own bedrooms and we observed that they were supported to personalise their bedrooms. People said they can have a key to their bedrooms if they wanted one.
