During a routine inspection

We saw that staff communicated effectively with people using the service, among whom was a person who did not express their needs and wishes through verbal communication. People related well to staff and clearly knew and liked the registered manager. One person told us "I like my key worker." We noted that the nature of activities offered was based on the needs and preferences of people who used the services. We observed that people appeared to be happy and relaxed. It was evident that a key aim of the service was to support people to be involved in everyday activities in the local community. We found that people were supported by a sufficient number of appropriately prepared staff in maintaining their independence and their involvement in the community.

A staff member told us that: "If you build up trust and confidence in the person they will do things themselves." The manager said that the service liaised with community health and social care agencies, such as the local Community Learning Disability Team, when required. Records we reviewed confirmed this. The three staff members we spoke to had all undertaken training on safeguarding vulnerable adults and were aware how to raise concerns with adult safeguarding services. We saw evidence of the provider's thorough quality assurance system and discussed this with the manager.

During a routine inspection

We made two visits to the service. We saw that people using the service had a good relationship with staff. We noted that the pace of activity was appropriate to the needs of people. One person told us they were happy living there. They said they particularly enjoyed going to a singing group in Wendover. However, they also expressed concern about another person. We discussed that concern with staff. Another person who was quite ill physically told us they were comfortable at the time we saw them. We saw that they were being appropriately cared for in liaison with the person's GP.

A relative described the service as 'Fantastic'. They said their relative (the person using the service) was very well looked after. They said the staff always try to solve problems and they had complete confidence in the service. The person using the service told us they were 'All right'. They said the food was good and the staff were fine.

We found that people were supported by staff in maintaining their independence and their involvement in the community. The service liaised with community health and social care agencies when required. The staff were aware of issues around safeguarding vulnerable adults and the service liaised with adult safeguarding services when concerns were raised.
