During a routine inspection

People told us that their opinions were sought so they were involved in decisions and that their choices were respected. The examples they gave included choosing what to wear, what time to get up and go to bed and what activities they would like to do. People also told us that staff treated them with dignity and respect. People's comments included: 'we choose what meals we have for the week' and "staff always knock on my door before coming in and I can choose to use my time how I want to'.

We spoke with two people's relatives and they made positive comments about the staff and were satisfied with the quality of support their family member had received. Their comments included: 'I am very satisfied and I would recommend the service' and 'I don't have to worry, (family member) is receiving good quality support and (family member) is happy in the shared house'.

We visited nine people in their supported living accommodation. People told us that they felt 'safe' living in their home and that they had no worries or concerns. Some people were not able to share their views verbally to us. From our observations we did not observe any concerns regarding safeguarding of people who used the service.

We found that the service had robust recruitment policies and procedures in place that the registered manager followed when employing new members of staff.

The provider had an effective system to regularly assess and monitor the quality of service that people received.

Their comments included: "I choose what I want to eat." 'We have house meetings to discuss any problems and to decide what activities we want to do.'

We found that all the people we spoke with were happy with the support they were receiving. We spoke with relatives and they told us they were involved in their relatives supporting planning. Their comments included: 'I have a lot of input in my son's support plan.' 'The communication from staff is very good.'

We found that staff were clear about what their roles and responsibilities were and what action they would take if they saw or suspected any abuse. People told us that they felt "safe" and that they had no worries or concerns. They all said that if they had any concerns or worries they would speak to the staff or manager.

We found that staff had received training and were supervised. We saw evidence that staff had the chance to develop and improve their skills.

We found evidence that Mencap Sheffield regularly assessed and monitored the quality of their service.
