West Sussex Domiciliary Care provides personal care and supported living services to people with learning disabilities in their home. At the time of our visit we were informed that there were thirty people who use their services. People's care packages were tailored to people's needs, which varied from twenty four hour to visiting support in the mornings, afternoons and evenings.

During our visit to the West Sussex Domiciliary Care offices we looked at records which included care files of people who use the service, personnel file of employees and information the provide used to assess and monitor the quality of the service. We spoke with individuals who used the service and a relative of another individual on the phone. We also spoke with the nominated individual, a practice leader and a service manager of one of the services that provides domiciliary care service.

During our visit we were invited to visit a supported living service, where West Sussex Domiciliary Care provides services. The service provides accommodation for five people, and has five hundred and twenty five hours of support per week. All the people living in the accommodation had been assessed under the Mental Capacity Act. However due to the nature of their disabilities we were unable to gather their views on the outcomes. People looked happy and relaxed in the presence of staff. Whilst we were at the supported living service we were able to speak to three staff including the service manager, a relative whose relatives used the service and two health care professionals who were visiting at the time.

Comments we received from one individual were positive, the one relative we spoke with told us that they had seen an improvement in their relative's behaviour and the other told us that there had been marked improvements in the care their relative received. The two health care professionals both told us that they had no concerns about the service offered.

We spoke with three family members and one service user. Family members of service users told us they were happy with the care provided by West Sussex Domiciliary Care and the staff were professional and supportive. The service user we spoke with told us that support staff understood his needs and he felt safe with them. One family member said that the support staff who work in her son's supported living flat 'have great respect for the people living there.' Another parent of a service user said, 'staff are excellent in all aspects of care.'

We also spoke with six staff members, including three service managers. Staff told us that they had a high level of job satisfaction and felt supported by their colleagues and managers. Staff told us they had good access to training and development and were given regular supervision. One support worker said the service managers were very accessible, even out of usual business hours. Another support worker said her experience has 'been very good, very rewarding.'

We spoke to a representative from the local authority who told us that the provider 'goes the extra mile' and maintains a good working relationship with the local social services teams.
