Overview

Inspection carried out on 21 January 2014

During a routine inspection

Students and their relatives told us they were happy with the care and support they received from Dilston College. One student told us, "It's brilliant. I love it here. The staff are great and they help me with things." Another student commented, "College is good. The staff are good." Relatives told us they were involved in decisions made about their child's care, the provider listened to their views and staff kept them informed about their child's progress at the College.

We found that students' consent was obtained before care was delivered and staff acted in accordance with their wishes. Where students did not have the capacity to consent we found the provider acted in accordance with legal requirements.

We found that students' care needs were assessed and their care and treatment was planned. Where necessary, external healthcare professionals had been consulted about their care needs.

We looked at how the home managed medicines and found there were appropriate arrangements in place for the safe administration, recording, obtaining, handling, storage and disposal of medicines.

There were enough suitably skilled and qualified staff on duty to meet students' needs safely and appropriately.

The provider had a robust complaints procedure in place and students had been made aware of the complaints procedure in a format that met their needs. Staff told us how they would deal with complaints in line with the provider's complaints policy.
