During a routine inspection

We spent a day at the home and spoke with two people who used the service. We also spoke with the registered manager and three members of care staff. People told us they were happy with the care they received and that staff were kind and helpful. One person told us, 'I am happy here'.

We found there were suitable arrangements in place for obtaining, and acting in accordance with, the consent of people who lived at Richmond House Care Home in relation to the care and treatment provided for them.

We saw there was appropriate referral and care planning documentation used at the home in respect of people who lived at Richmond House.

Richmond House had appropriate arrangements in place to ensure the safe management of medicines at the home. We saw there were appropriate arrangements for obtaining, recording, administration and safe disposal of medicines used at the home.

People who lived at the home were safe and their health and welfare needs were met by staff that had been appropriately recruited and were appropriately qualified, skilled, experienced and of good character.

Richmond House operated an effective complaints system which ensured that all feedback was dealt with appropriately and in a timely manner. During a routine inspection

People who lived in Richmond House told us they felt the home was 'nice'. We observed the staff had developed good relationships with the people that used the service. One member of staff told us they 'loved' working at Richmond.

During our inspection we saw the home had been recently redecorated and new carpet had been fitted in some of the areas. The home was spacious and well maintained.

The individual health and social care needs of the people that used the service were clearly documented and we saw evidence that people's wishes were considered and respected.

Richmond House was clean and tidy. Cleaning rotas were in place to ensure staff were aware of their responsibilities. The provider had ensured that any potential risk relating to infection control had been assessed.

A number of systems were in place to monitor the quality of service that was being provided. This ensured that people who lived at Richmond House were able to express their opinions and involved other stakeholders, such as relatives and professionals.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we looked around the home, spoke to three staff, people that lived at Richmond House and a persons representative.

The staff had a sound knowledge of all the individuals they were supporting. We met and spoke to all of the people that used the service when they returned from their planned activity. These activities included work placements and shopping. One person told us that 'it's alright here'. Another person invited us into their bedroom to show us the different things they had chosen, such as bedding and matching pyjamas.

We saw that all of the people that used the service had a care plan in place. These were mainly comprehensive and included people's likes and dislikes. The system for care planning overall was adequate; however on one occasion the care plan did not reflect the needs of an individual person.

We saw that the financial records maintained by staff at Richmond House were up to date and accurate. We counted the money held for two people and this corresponded with the records.

We were concerned with the cleanliness of the home. One person's representative told us that when they had recently visited the home they were 'disgusted' at what they saw.

Records relating to health and safety were not completed to reflect the current risks within the home.
