During a routine inspection

On the day of our inspection three people lived at the home and they had been together for a number of years. We found everyone was comfortable and relaxed in each other's company. Everyone received the same kind response from staff and were included in the activities and conversations that took place.

Some of the people who lived at the home were unable to communicate their experiences and views about the care they received. On person who lived at the home and was able to speak with us said: 'I like it here' and 'Staff help me when I need them to.'

After our inspection we spoke with two family members. They were positive about the care and support provided. One family member said that they were: 'Really pleased with the care and support X (person's name) was getting.'

We also looked at records, and spoke with one member of staff and a person who lived at the home.

Every person had individual plans of care, based on their learning disability and other health needs. It was clear from what we saw on the day of our inspection that staff knew people's social and health care needs. This was demonstrated in the staffing levels that made sure people received the individual support they needed at the right time.

We found that the information that was important to people's day to day care and support was available. This information was in every-day language and with pictures to ensure people who lived at the home could understand what was said. There were arrangements in place where required to help people with the bigger decisions so that their best interests were upheld.

We found that people had their own rooms which were private and personal to them. One person who lived at the home told us: 'My room is nice and I like it.' There were regular checks being completed to ensure that the premises were safe.

The provider had responsive systems in place to monitor and review people's experiences. These included the regular audits and quality checks that were carried out in the home. This ensured people received effective care that was of a good standard and kept people safe from harm.

During a routine inspection

There were four people living there on the day of our inspection. We met all the people living there, spoke with one person and spoke with the manager and two staff to find out their views about the service provided. Most people were unable to express their views verbally, so we spent time observing how staff supported them. We also spoke with three family members following our inspection

People made choices about what they did and what they ate and were supported to develop their independence skills. One person told us about the luncheon club they went to, which they enjoyed.

Staff knew how to support people to meet their needs and referred people to other health professionals. Staff followed advice from other professionals to ensure people's health and well being.

Staff knew how to safeguard the people living there from harm. We observed that people were comfortable in the company of staff and staff had received training to support people with their behaviour safely.

Staff told us they were provided with, 'Very good' training opportunities to keep people safe and meet their individual needs. This enabled them to offer effective care and support to the people who lived at the home.

One person said if they were not happy they would tell the staff. Family members and staff told us they were familiar with the complaints process. The provider had systems in place to monitor and review people's experiences and complaints.

During a routine inspection

The registered manager introduced us to people who lived at the home and they had the opportunity to spend time with us without staff being present. We were provided with information to help us talk and communicate with them and gain their views. One person who lived there was on holiday so we were not able to meet them.

We saw people choosing and making their pack lunch for the following day. People chose where and when they ate and decided on the evening activity. The registered manager offered additional information about an evening disco to help people make a choice of whether to go or not.

The home was well decorated and plans are in progress to update the decoration in the kitchen diner and people who lived at the home were deciding on the colours.

The home had a garden with a lawn area and a summer house which one person used as a quiet space. One person liked to ride their bike there and people were are able to play other outside games there. There was an area outside for people to grow their own vegetables, which some people had done, but no one living at the home had a keen interest in other types of gardening.
