During an inspection looking at part of the service

People were largely protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider had improved arrangements in place to manage medicines. However, medication administration records were not always completed fully. For two people we could not tell if they were being given their medicines appropriately to meet their needs.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Two people told us they received their medicines as required and they had no concerns. However we found that further improvements in respect of medicine management was still required.

Although we found there had been some improvements we found that people were still not fully protected against the risks associated with the unsafe use and management of medicines, by means of making appropriate arrangements for the obtaining, recording, handling, using, and safe administration of medicines.

During a routine inspection

Since our previous inspection we found there had been a change in the management structure. This had affected some of the required developments taking place following the last inspection in November 2012. The new manager was aware of the necessary improvements and they outlined how they intended to make these.

Three people told us they were happy living at the home and that their needs were met. One person said, 'The staff help me, they are kind and caring.' Another person said, 'I am fairly independent but I am helped when needed.'

We found that although improvements had been made in respect of care planning that further developments and improvements were needed.

Two people told us they received their medicines as required and they had no concerns. However we found that further improvements in respect of medicine management were still required.

People told us they felt that staff were well trained and competent to do carry out their job role.

We found that staff were supported to undertake additional training to develop their knowledge and skills, however improvements in respect of the induction and supervision process was needed.

We found that although most staff had been recruited and selected appropriately some improvements were needed to ensure people were fully protected from unsuitable staff being employed.

29 November 2012

During an inspection in response to concerns

We spoke with three people in respect of the care and support they received from staff. Two were happy with the level of support they received, whereas one person expressed some concerns. We discussed this with the manager who confirmed they were aware of some issues in relation to one person and these were currently being discussed with the person's social worker.

One person said, 'The staff are lovely, it's nice here, I am well looked after.' Another person said, 'The staff are very kind, they look after me in a way that I prefer and I am settled.'

One person said, 'I get my medicine when I need it.'

One person using the service told us the staff helped them as needed and they did not have to wait long for assistance. Another person said, 'The staff are very good, they are always there to help me.'

We saw there were sufficient staff available throughout the day to support people as needed. Staff were kind and considerate and they supported people in a timely manner.

Two people told us they felt the staff were good at their job and they were well trained.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with six people using the service to establish their views and experiences.

We also consulted with two members of staff in respect of their job roles and the support they offered to people using the service.

Due to some people's complex needs they were unable to remember the initial process they had undertaken when they first moved into the home. Nevertheless three out of six people said they had received all of the information they needed before they made a decision to use the service.

One person said they could express their views in respect of the care and support they received, 'The staff come and sit and talk to me about my care plans and make sure that everything is ok and I am happy.' Another person said, 'I'm not sure about my care plans, but I can tell staff what I want and the staff look after me how I like it. If I was unhappy I could say and they would make changes.'

Two people said they felt they were involved in any decisions about their care and support and their needs were met.

All six people using the service said activities were on offer if they chose to join in them and they were happy with these.

All six people using the service said they felt safe living at the care home and that staff would listen to them if they had any concerns.

All six people using the service also said that enough staff were available to help them when needed. One person said 'The staff are polite and helpful, there are enough staff and I do not have to wait long for help.' Another person said, 'I am happy here, the staff are nice and respectful, they do as I ask and they help me when needed.'

People using the service said staff were approachable and they could offer feedback about the service at any time. One person said, 'I can give staff both positive and negative feedback and they listen to you.' Another person using the service said, 'If I thought anything needed to change I could tell the staff and they would listen.'
