All Inspections

5 December 2013

During a routine inspection

There were nine people living at Beechwood Lodge at the time of this inspection visit.

People spoken with told us that they were well looked after and were treated with respect at all times. One person said, 'I am happy here. There is nothing that I do not like. There are not too many rules, I can do what I want when I want.'

People told us that they received good care and were well treated. The care documentation demonstrated that people's individual needs were assessed and responded to.

We looked at the systems and processes in place for the safe management of medicines. We found that records were accurate and systems in place ensured the safe administration of medicines.

We looked at the staffing arrangements in place. People told us that there were enough staff to attend to their needs. One person said, 'If you need a staff member you ring your bell and they come, day or night.'

We saw that complaints were taken seriously and there was an effective complaints system available. These processes ensured complaints raised were resolved to people's satisfaction.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with three people who live at Beechwood Lodge and three members of staff. We looked at four care records and a number of audits, policies and procedures in order to evaluate the quality of care provided in the home and to ensure that standards were being met.

People told us that they were well cared for and that staff met their needs. One person told us "the staff here are very good". Another told us, 'Staff do their best and we have a laugh'. People were encouraged to be independent and have choice over their daily living routines. Staff told us they were there to support people in achieving their goals and priorities.

We saw records that showed that people were asked for consent. For example, people were asked by staff when they would like support with their personal care. We observed people being treated with dignity and respect. We looked at training records that showed that staff received development to help them perform their roles safely and well. We looked at records that showed that there were regular quality assurance and review processes in place to maintain service quality levels and measure the satisfaction of people using the service and those providing it.

During a routine inspection

There are currently nine people living in the home. We were able to speak with 4 people who live in the home and one relative who was visiting.

People at the home tell us they receive an excellent standard of care, that staff understand their needs and consult them about their care and support. They like the food and find the overall standard of cleanliness very good.

One person said they are 'well cared for' and that 'staff go out of their way to make things comfortable'. They also said 'The home is always kept very clean and was kept warm during the snow with extra blankets provided'. They commented that staff used to have more time to sit and talk to us but there is a lot of paperwork for them to complete now, they do come and talk to me but not for as long as they used to.' Another person told us 'staff care for me how I wish them to, they know everything I like and what I don't like' 'My key worker goes through my care plan with me and we discuss anything I am having difficulty with' 'The meals here are very good, they know exactly how much to give me' 'I do know how to make a complaint but I have not had to yet'.
