During an inspection looking at part of the service

We identified concerns with the premises when we last visited the service. The provider sent us an action plan telling us how they were going to make improvements. We carried out this inspection to check the improvements had been made.

Although some cosmetic work was still required, we found work had been undertaken to make improvements to the premises to ensure the safety of people who used the service, staff and visitors.

During a routine inspection

Most people in the home could not verbalise, but one person we spoke with said, "I like it here." Relatives we spoke with were complimentary about the service and the staff and were confident the needs of their relatives were met. One relative said; "I trust them completely...They're very transparent and that's enourmously important." Another said; "The care is very, very good...I can call anytime to find out how [relative] is."

People's individual needs were assessed and support delivered in line with person centred plans of care that met their needs and protected their rights.

We found the home to be clean and people were cared for in a hygeinic environment. The premises required some work to be brought fully up to standard.

The provider had a comprehensive recruitment policy and procedure which ensured staff were suitably skilled, qualified and of good character before they began employment in the home.

The provider had effective methods in place to assess and monitor the quality of the service provided for people. A suitable complaints policy and procedure was in place and was available in an easy to read format for people who used the service.

During a routine inspection

At the time of our visit to Higher Morris Farm there were five young adults living at the home. Four of these people were unable to communicate with us verbally. One person who could verbalise was spending some time with his family in the community. However, we returned to chat with this individual over lunch a few days later. We were also able to speak with the parent of one young adult by telephone.

People living at the home looked happy in their environment and were evidently very relaxed and content in the presence of staff members. Evidence was available to demonstrate people living at the home were supported to experience a way of life suitable to their individual needs.

Comments received from the young adult and the relative were all positive. They were both complimentary about the staff team and the management of the service.
