All Inspections

During a routine inspection

During the inspection we spoke with twelve people who used the service, five visitors, the manager and eight members of staff. People told us that they were happy with the care they received and the staff who delivered it. One person told us, 'The staff are very good, they look after me very well' and a relative said of the staff, 'They do everything kindly and with sensitivity.'

People told us that they enjoyed the activities provided by the home and that they now had more opportunities to go out than they had in the past. People said they were happy with the quality and variety of food provided by the home. We found that people's needs in relation to nutrition had been assessed and communicated to catering staff.

We found that the provider had taken action to improve the arrangements for infection prevention and control, an area in which non-compliance was identified at our last inspection. We also found that the provider had systems in place to monitor the quality of the service people received.

We found that staff had attended training in mandatory areas and that refresher training in these areas was delivered regularly. However fire drill training was out of date for some staff and some staff had not attended training in supporting people with dementia. Records of staff supervision indicated that some staff had not received individual reviews on a regular basis.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with 12 people who used the service and five relatives during our inspection. We also spoke with the temporary manager, two members of nursing staff and four care staff.

People who used the service told us that staff knew their needs well and were available when they needed them. They said that they were able to make choices about their daily lives, such as what time they got up and went to bed, how they spent their time during the day and what they ate, and that staff respected these choices.

Almost all the people we spoke with were happy with the care they received from staff. One person told us that the staff were 'Very good' and another said of the staff on her unit 'They're all good here, very kind.' One person on one unit told us that they had complained about a member of staff. We found that the provider had taken steps to address this complaint, which was under investigation at the time of our inspection.

The relatives we spoke with told us that there were always enough staff on duty to meet people's needs. They said that their family members received care from staff that were familiar to them and who knew their needs well. One relative told us that the care their family member received was 'Brilliant'.

Relatives told us that the home always consulted them when decisions about their family member's care were being made. They said that the home kept them informed about any events affecting their family member's welfare.

During a routine inspection

People said staff respected their privacy and dignity. Though none could recall being directly involved in planning their care and support they were satisfied with the way their needs were met. They felt confident that any request for change to their care routines would be accommodated. People told us their choices were usually respected. They did not have to participate in organised activities if they didn't wish to. They perceived staff to be competent and skilled and found them friendly and caring in their approach. There was opportunity for people to practice their religious beliefs. People said they felt safe and well cared for. They felt able to openly express their views about the home.
