During a routine inspection

On the day of our visit we observed care being delivered by an experienced team of staff who were supported in their roles by an effective management structure.

We looked at the care records relating to people's care and support and saw that their wishes had been taken into account in planning their care, with the help of relatives if necessary. We saw that care was being delivered in a way that promoted people's independence and the provider had an effective system in place to manage risks to people's health.

Whilst people were protected against the risks of inadequate hydration and nutrition we found that some people were unhappy with the food provided at the home. We were assured by the manager that they were doing everything they could to balance the wishes of all people living in the home and that their comments about the food were being taken seriously.

We spoke with five people and three relatives, all of whom told us they were happy with the care provided in the home. One person told us "it's absolutely wonderful here. The staff are excellent". One person's relative told us that the staff "go the extra nine yards for all of the residents".

During a routine inspection

There were thirty five people living at the service at the time of our inspection. We spent time observing care practices, talking to people and looking at records.

We saw that people were involved in their care. Staff gave time for people when they needed it. One person told us they were "very happy here". Another person said it was "100% and would like to say it was even better".

We met with nine people who used the service. They all said they were happy. They told us the staff were "very kind" and "always there when I need anything'. People told us they were involved in their support plans and activities. One person told us "oh yes, all the staff know what I like". Another person told us they were "always being asked my opinion on things".

The service had a good quality assurance system in place. Complaints and concerns were listened to, recorded and acted upon immediately. People told us that they felt safe and were able to talk to staff if they had any concerns.

We saw that staff were respectful and caring. People's dignity was promoted at all times. Staff were knowledgeable about people's support needs. One staff told us they felt their role was all about "giving people what they want".

Care plans reflected each person's individual needs and preferences. Families were encouraged to be involved as much as possible where people wished.

During a routine inspection

People told us they were happy with the care they were receiving and that they were given choices about their care. They said that the staff respected their privacy and treated them with respect and kindness. People said they never felt rushed to do anything or rushed with their care. One person commented 'You can choose when to get up, if you want to stay in bed for an extra few hours that's fine'. Another person described how the staff respected their wishes saying 'When I first came here I preferred to be called Mrs X, but as I got to know them I was happy for them to call me by my first name. The staff respected that'. A relative commented 'I like the personal touches, they will come and do X's nails and eyebrows'. Everyone we spoke with said they knew who to talk to if they had any concerns about their care and felt confident that their concerns would be taken seriously.

People told us that there were activities in the home each day. One person said 'There are always activities going on and you can choose what you want to do'. Another person commented 'We have a pianist who comes in who is very good' and 'I love gardening and the gardener has helped me to pot up some things in the greenhouse'.

People told us they were satisfied with the meals provided and were always given a choice of what they had to eat and drink. People told us that 'The food wasn't great for a while, but now the chef has changed and it is much better', 'The quality is good' and 'We have a choice of two main meals, but they will always make you an omelette or something else if you want'.

People told us that the home was always kept clean. Several people commented that if they reported something was in need of repair it was always fixed very quickly. People said that they had been able to personalise their room and bring their own furniture and belongings. One person commented 'I was able to bring my own furniture and that's what really made it for me'.

People using the service told us that they felt there were enough staff working in the home to meet their needs. They said that the staff were always available to come quickly when they called them and the longest they had ever had to wait was about five minutes. Comments about the staff support included;
