During a routine inspection

We found that people who lived at The Gables had choices and were well cared for. One person told us, 'I like living here. I like my room.'

Care plans were individual to people and up to date. People had access to an independent advocate who supported them to be involved in decisions about their care.

We saw that a number of different systems were in place to monitor the quality of care provided. Feedback from people who used the service was regularly sought and the provider took action as a result.

Staff told us they enjoyed their work and felt supported. We found there were enough skilled staff to meet the needs of people who used the service.

During a routine inspection

We gathered evidence of people's experiences of the service by talking with people, observing how they spent their time and noting how they interacted with other people living in the home and with staff.

Some people living at The Gables were unable to speak with us but we saw that people had individual ways of communicating with members of staff and were able to make them aware of their needs and wishes. Staff showed a good understanding of people's needs and preferences and we noted that staff treated people with respect.

Relatives told us that overall they were happy with the care and when they had raised issues in the past they were addressed to their satisfaction.

One person told us about their holiday and how much they enjoyed it.

We found that staff received the training they needed to provide care and support safely and were able to demonstrate that they understood the needs of the people using the service.

We saw that there was a lively atmosphere in the home and that people chose how they spent their time; some people joined in with activities and some preferred to watch rather than participate.

People told us that the staff are kind and caring and they are supported well, both in the home and when they go out. People who attended the residents meeting recently, were consulted on the plans for redecoration of the home. People with whom we spoke, told us that the staff are knowledgeable and know what they are doing.
