All Inspections

2 December 2010 and 9 December 2011

During an inspection in response to concerns

We asked one person about the way they are respected as an individual at the home. They told us that some staff knock on bedroom doors before entering and lighters are confiscated for those people that smoke.

The people we spoke to about the support they receive to plan the care they receive were unaware of the care planning process of the home.

We observed staff assist people with personal care tasks but no other involvement with people to support their day to day activities. Staff did not deliver the care people needed to maintain their social and emotional needs.

People at the home have two communal areas and will usually sit in the central area of the home, which has a seating area with a large television. While staff sit in this central area of the property, staff were seen talking and interacting with each other but not with the people sitting in the same area.

We spoke to two individuals about the meals served at the home and these individuals told us the food is good. We were also told that they had sufficient to eat.

The two people we asked if they felt safe told us that they didn't feel safe all the time. Both said that there are people who at times exhibit aggressive and violent behaviours who made them feel unsafe

People we spoke to told us that all medications are administered by the staff.

Two people at the home were asked if they knew what to do if they were not happy. Both individuals said they would go to a member of staff.

During a tour of the property we saw that the complaints procedure is not on display for people living in the home to see and use. People at the home are not given access to an effective complaints procedure and there are no systems in place for raising concerns about their care.

We understood from the area manager that during the registered managers' absence temporary managers with day to day responsibility of the home will be appointed. These managers will have the specialist skills with supporting people that may challenge and with leading staff teams.
