All Inspections

During a routine inspection

People were involved in making decisions about their care and treatment. Consent to care and treatment had been asked for and recorded. The service acted in accordance with legal requirements where consent could not be given.

We spoke to people who used the service and observed people interacting with staff during our visit. People told us they enjoyed living at the home and that staff supported them. People told us, "the staff are good", and, 'if I want help, I ask, and I always get it.' Staff engaged with people in a friendly and respectful way, offered choices and supported people to participate in activities.

Care plans and risk assessments were person centred and reviewed regularly. We saw evidence that other professionals had contributed to these.

The service had a detailed safeguarding policy in place, and we saw that staff received annual safeguarding training. Staff members were able to describe different examples of abuse and knew what to do if they had a concern. The service environment was clean, well maintained, and suitable for the needs of the people who used it. People were supported to personalise their own spaces.

Staff received appropriate professional development. Staff received a range of mandatory and other training. Regular supervisions, appraisals and team meetings took place.

The provider had effective quality assurance procedures that were used to inform service improvements.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people who use the service and one visitor. People were happy with the service and the care provided. Comments included, 'it's very good here,' and 'they know what I like.' We found that people experienced care and support that met their individual needs and protected their rights.

People were complimentary about the staff provided at the service. 'They treat me well and are very helpful,' one person said. A visitor told us that attention was paid to people in the service and that people 'were not left to their own devices,' which we also observed. People confirmed that they were treated respectfully, spoken to in an appropriate manner, and were enabled to have choice and control over their care and support. Our observations at the service matched this.

We found there were enough skilled and experienced staff to meet people's needs, and that appropriate staff recruitment processes took place.

People told us they were happy with the communal environment and their rooms. 'The place is well-furnished,' one person said. We found that people in the service were protected against the risks of unsafe or unsuitable premises.

During a routine inspection

We asked people their views on living in the home and they told us that it was 'very well organised' and 'I like living here'. They praised the care given by staff and when we asked if there were enough staff on duty they told us that 'there is always someone here'. They said that members of staff were 'respectful', 'patient' and 'very considerate' and that their privacy and dignity was respected. Although one person said that there were 'not a lot of activities' another person told us that there were 'lots, it's different from one day to the next'. We asked people whether they were satisfied with the meals service in the home. One person said that the lunch they had eaten was 'very nice, nice and filling'. They confirmed that there was choice on the menu and said that 'they always ask us what we would like'.

We asked people if there was someone they could talk with if they had any concerns and they all told us that they would talk to the manager or to a member of staff. When we asked people if they felt that they would be listened to, people said that 'they always listen to what we say'. However, people added that they had no problems. As people were not aware of their care plan we asked if they received enough support to meet their needs. They told us that 'I get as much support as I need'.

People confirmed that they felt safe and comfortable living in the home and were 'perfectly comfortable' with the members of staff that supported them. When asked about the quality of the care that they received people told us that 'we are all so well looked after here' and 'living here can be good'
