During an inspection looking at part of the service

We inspected this service in August 2013 and at that time we had concerns about the administration of medications. During this visit we found improvements had been made and that the service was compliant with this outcome. We found that prescribed medications were held in stock and that they were administered appropriately.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our last inspection in May 2013 we found concerns with the arrangements for handling medicines. The provider wrote to us and told us that they had taken action to address the concerns. At this visit we saw that this part of the plan was being acted upon but there were still concerns around medicine handling.

We saw there were not appropriate arrangements were in place for recording the administration of medicines. We found omissions in the records made when medicines were given to people and there was no indication whether the medicines were given or not. We found some medicines which had been prescribed to people were not available at the home.

During a routine inspection

People told us they were treated with dignity and respect. One person said "people (staff) are lovely, really caring." We observed staff interacting with people in a respectful manner. People told us that their care needs were being met. One person said "it is very good here, I am well looked after." We found risk assessments and care plans were in place. These set out how to meet people's individual needs. Records showed that people had access to heath care professionals.

People we spoke with told us that the food provided was good with meal portions sufficient. They said they had a choice of dishes at each meal. One person commented 'the food is lovely and there's plenty of it." We saw people were offered a choice of meal, and were given support to eat where needed. We found the service had enough staff to meet people's needs.

We found several errors with the recording of medication. This increased the likelihood of mistakes been made when administering medication to people.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with people who use the service, and with relatives who were visiting the service at the time of our inspection. We received positive feedback. Comments included, 'I would say that they treat me with respect.' and 'Staff treat me well, they are friendly.'
