We found that the home provided good overall care for people who were using the service. One person who used the service told us "I like it here."

We saw that staff spoke to people in a kind and courteous manner addressing them politely and using their preferred names. We observed positive interactions between staff and people who used the service.

During our visit we saw six people who used the service going to take part in activities within the community and in the afternoon five people were participating in playing music with support from staff and an external facilitator.

We also saw that people were supported to access external services such as occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, general practitioners and hospital appointments.

We saw examples of information provided and records of four people who used the service which were accurate and up to date.

The premises were found to be welcoming with a number of communal areas. We saw four bedrooms and noted that they were in good decorative order and had been personalised with pictures and family photographs.

We spoke to four members of staff who told us they had received safeguarding training and we reviewed staff training records which confirmed this.

Staff told us they enjoyed their work and felt supported by the management team.

We reviewed staff files and saw records of regular supervision and appraisal.

By using SOFI to observe what was happening we saw that everyone had high levels of well being. Staff knew people who use the service well, and could anticipate needs. Staff gave options whenever they could. They also used a variety of communication methods dependent upon what was understood by people.

The home was made up of three types of accommodation. There were two flats within the garden of the home, they had a living room and kitchen area. There were also bedsits with small kitchenette areas and single bedrooms with en-suite facilities.

There was a sensory cabin which was separate from the main house. It had a range of lighting and music facilities for sensory impairment.

The home was decorated to a high standard throughout, with all the bedrooms having degree of personalisation and individuality.

We spoke with two people who use the service. One person said they were 'fine' and reported that they liked living at the service. Another individual said that they were treated with dignity and respect but felt that their needs were not being met at the service. They stated that staff did their best but there were too many people living at the home who needed help from them.

We observed the care and support being given to individuals during our visit and saw that people were treated with dignity and respect by staff members. There were a number of very positive interactions between staff and individuals although the number of these varied from person to person.

Four staff members spoken with said that the service provided a good quality of care and that they felt well supported by the managers at the service. Comments included 'it's a good staff team', 'it's a good place' and 'I can always talk to someone'.

Two staff members said that the service needed additional staff to fully meet people's support needs particularly considering the wide range of needs the home caters for. Two other staff felt that there were enough staff on duty to meet people's needs.
