All Inspections

16 October 2013

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with three people who used the service and two of their relatives. We also spoke with three members of staff including the deputy manager and two care workers. We looked at care documentation, records, audits and minutes of staff and residents' meetings.

The majority of people who used the service had very limited verbal communication. One person told us that they liked living at the home, they were satisfied with the care and support they received and the service met their needs. They told us that they were 'happy', staff were 'kind' and there was always someone around to provide help and support. A relative told us, 'The staff are all very kind and so enthusiastic. We appreciate the fact that they work hard to find out just what my daughter likes doing and what she is interested in'.

We were shown examples of the recently implemented, individualised and comprehensive care plans. They provided structure and guidance for care workers, to ensure that the assessed current and on-going support needs could be met consistently and safely.

People were protected against the risks associated with medication because the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to administer, monitor and manage medicines appropriately.

We found that people using the service were protected by effective staff recruitment and selection procedures.

The service had effective systems in place to deal with people's comments and complaints.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we found that care workers had formed close professional relationships with people living in the home. The premises were clean and well maintained and the atmosphere was relaxed and homely.

We found that comprehensive and well maintained person centred support plans enabled care workers to meet people's assessed needs in a structured and consistent manner.

Care workers received training appropriate to their roles and responsibilities, reflecting the assessed support needs of people living in the home.

As far as practicable and in accordance with their individual care plans, people were enabled and supported to make choices about their daily lives.

Communication and consultation with people's family members was effective and ongoing. Relatives felt well informed and had the opportunity to partake in individual assessment, care planning and reviewing processes.

Positive comments received from people living in the home and their relatives indicated a high level of satisfaction with the home and the services provided:

'I like living here and am very happy. The staff know me very well and I have everything I need'.

'I'm very, very happy with the home and the care that my daughter receives. She has settled so well and we can see the progress that she is making every time we visit her'.

Positive comments from people living in the home and their relatives indicated a high level of satisfaction with the care and support provided:

'I like living here, it's so cool. When my friends come to visit me they are very envious'.

'The manager is very approachable and the staff are all very helpful. I have no complaints and am more than satisfied with the care provided'.
