During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because some of the people who lived there had complex needs which meant they were not always able to tell us about their experiences. We spoke with two people who were living at the service.

We saw that people were treated with respect and dignity. People were supported to be independent in line with their individual abilities and to make choices about their daily lives. For example, people chose what to do, what to eat, if they preferred a bath or shower and how their personal care was provided.

People's needs were set in their individual care records which were kept up to date and had been regularly reviewed. The information provided staff with guidance about how to meet people's needs in the ways they preferred, and about how to promote their health and welfare. A person told us that they were 'very happy' at the home and their relatives 'thought they were a different person' as they had done so well there.

People lived in well maintained and safe accommodation and had chosen how they would like their own rooms to be arranged.

There were enough staff on duty to give people the support they needed. We saw that people were comfortable with staff and interactions between staff and people were positive and respectful. Staff did not rush people when supporting or speaking with them and respected when people wished to exercise their independence.

Whilst it had not received any complaints, the home had a complaints policy and procedure in place.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because the people had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences. We observed staff interacting courteously and communicating effectively with people. We saw that people appeared happy and at ease around the staff.

In our discussions with staff they demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the people living at the service. This was confirmed by our observations and the record keeping.

Care records showed that people had been supported and involved to make decisions about their lives, including their care and support. When people's needs changed, we found that records had been updated to reflect this.

Staff spoken with demonstrated good understanding of how to safeguard people from harm. Training records showed that staff received regular training to update their knowledge on abuse and safeguarding.

Records showed the provider regularly assessed and monitored the quality of the service. We saw that people and their representatives were asked their views about the home and information from other professionals were sought.
