There should be enough members of staff to keep people safe and meet their health and welfare needs (outcome 13)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by sufficient numbers of appropriate staff.

How this check was done

We reviewed all the information we hold about this provider, carried out a visit on 02/03/2012, talked to staff and talked to people who use services.

Our judgement

The provider is compliant with this outcome. People who use this service are supported by sufficient numbers of competent staff.

User experience

People we spoke with frequently told us how good the staff were. They were helpful, kind and showed concern.

Other evidence

Staff told us that there were sufficient staff on duty at various times of the day to meet the needs of those living at Holmwood. The manager told us that there were no current vacancies. Three part-time staff were being inducted on the day of our visit, and were rostered to do shadow shifts until assessed as competent.

Training records in staff files showed that all mandatory training courses were up to date, that included fire procedures, moving and handling, dementia care, safeguarding vulnerable adults, food hygiene and first aid. Some courses such as dementia awareness, completed by all care staff, and the safe handling of medications, completed by all senior staff, had been done with a local college over several weeks. These courses increased the level of knowledge and competence of the staff. The majority of the care staff had achieved NVQ Level 3 in Care.
