During a routine inspection

People we spoke with told us they felt happy living at the service. One person said " oh, it's so nice here". Another person told us "we do things we like". People told us they felt respected by all staff. We saw staff were relaxed, pleasant and patient with people.

People told us they felt involved in their care and welfare. One person told us they "like to tell staff what I want them to do". We saw that people's families were involved in writing person centred support plans with their relative. Two people showed us their plans, complete with photos and messages from everyone who was important to them.

We saw people were given choices of activities in the evenings and weekends. One person told us "it's bingo tomorrow" and added "we all like bingo".

We saw that people had diaries to record activities they had enjoyed and for staff to record comments about the day. We saw that one person's diary had entries from the day service they attended. We saw that the comments were positive and respectful.

People also told us that they felt safe and were able to talk to staff if they had any concerns. Two people told us that staff 'always have time for a chat when I want one'.

We saw that staff received appropriate training to their roles and were confident and patient in their daily work. All staff we spoke with told us they would raise any concerns if they had any. One staff said "oh yes, of course, but I can't see it happening".

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke with the provider and manager of the service. We were shown the work that had been undertaken in order for the service to comply with the regulations.

We spoke with people who used the service and observed them interacting with the staff at the home. The atmosphere was very friendly and informal. We met with one person in their room. They were happy to show me their room and talk about their experience of using the service.

During a routine inspection

At the time of the inspection there were nine people living at the home. We spoke with all nine of the people who used the service and five members of staff. People we spoke with were complimentary about the service they received. They told us they were involved in making choices about their lives and were treated with dignity and respect.

One resident said "it's good here. Staff are nice to us". Another person told us they 'liked Wednesday night activities'. While another person told us 'I like walking in the park'. All people we spoke with told us they felt safe at the home and were supported by kind staff.

Four of the people we spoke with showed us their art work for the Olympics and were keen to tell us about the party they were organising with the staff when the Olympics were over.

We were told by people who used the service they were able to make lots of choices about what to wear, the menus and the activities they took part in. One person told us' I go to Girl Guides and I like that'. They also told us they had chosen to do pottery classes weekly and staff enabled them to attend.

We saw that as part of planning the weekly Wednesday evening activity all people using the service meet with staff every eight to ten weeks to discuss ideas. These were then planned into the programme. They told us "I enjoy Wednesday evenings" and "we are going out for a meal".

People we spoke with told us they felt safe living at Abberleigh House and they would feel able speak to staff if they were worried. Two people showed us their daily diaries staff had helped them to write. These contain lots of pictures of their activities through the day.

28 February 2012

During an inspection looking at part of the service

The purpose of this review was to check that improvements had been made to achieve compliance with people being able to give consent to their care and treatment.

On this occasion we did not involve all the people who lived in the home.

To check people's best interests were safeguarded when they not able to make their own decisions, we reviewed the arrangements for one person who had recently attended a dental appointment. We saw evidence to confirm that prior to the appointment an assessment of the person's capacity to make decisions had been carried out and a meeting had taken place to confirm that the dental appointment was in the person's best interests."

We found the service compliant with outcome 2.
