People should be cared for by staff who are properly qualified and able to do their job (outcome 12)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by staff who are fit, appropriately qualified and are physically and mentally able to do their job.

How this check was done

We carried out a visit on 19 April 2013, checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care, talked with people who use the service and talked with carers and / or family members. We talked with staff.

Our judgement

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff.

Reasons for our judgement

There were effective recruitment and selection processes in place. We looked at a number of staff records held by the provider during our inspection.

We saw evidence the provider had a policy in place for the recruitment of staff. The policy contained effective processes to ensure people were not discriminated against during recruitment.

We looked at the recruitment records of four staff who were currently working for the agency to see how they had been recruited The records included an application form, CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check and references from previous employers. This information was important to make sure that the right staff were recruited to the service to help protect people and keep them safe.

Care workers told us they had received an induction before they took up their duties. They said they worked with others until they felt confident to work by themselves. We saw the staff records which recorded the induction training and the supervision of staff.
