During a routine inspection

People were positive in their comments about Santralla, one person told us that that she went out with a member of staff: 'We go to all the shops I like.' People told us they felt safe and that the manager and staff asked their opinion about their care and acted on it. One person told us: 'They often arrange for me to have fish and chips from the fish shop.'

During a routine inspection

People said they understood their care and were offered choices about how they lived their lives. They felt involved and could make comments to staff if there was anything they wanted to change or if they had any concerns or complaints. One person said. 'The best thing about this place is that it isn't regimented.' Another person said 'I often tell them if there's something I think needs sorting out. They're usually pretty good at dealing with things quickly.'

People said the service was well organised and that their views were sought and acted upon. One person said 'They are interested in the little things that make life better. They don't try to make me join in when I don't want to and they ask me what I think about things.'

People said that staff always asked for their consent to any treatment or care and that their care was explained to them so they understood what they were consenting to. One person said he understood he was free to go out unaccompanied but that he had been consulted over the risks involved and agreed to a plan to minimise those risks.

People thought the food was very good. One person said. 'They are very good at getting food you like. I like pikelets and they go out and get them for me.' Another person said 'It's grand. The food is smashing.' People also said they felt safe at Santralla and that the home was clean. One person said 'I feel safe because the staff know what I need.'

People were confident staff understood what medication they needed.

People were happy with the quality and safety of their surroundings and were generally confident that staff understood how to use equipment and that it was kept in good order. One person said,' They all know how to use the hoist, I feel safe with them.' However, another person said 'Sometimes the stair lift doesn't work so I need to ask for assistance.'

People thought the staff were helpful and friendly and that the atmosphere was supportive. One person said 'The staff are wonderful. They really understand what I need and make sure I get the right help.' People felt there were sufficient staff around to make sure they were cared for properly. One person said, 'I don't go out much but the staff do take people out who want to go.'
