During an inspection looking at part of the service

We spoke to five people who used the service and one relative. We also spoke to Newham safeguarding team. People told us that they were able to express any concerns they had to the manager or any member of staff. One person said 'staff have time to listen to me when I have a moan. They always try to find ways to help me." Another person said 'I have nothing to grumble about at the moment, but when I do, I know I can talk to staff or the manager. My daughter also lets staff know if I have any concerns." Staff said the manager was approachable and they could go to them any time with any concerns.

People who used the service were protected from the risk of abuse, because the provider had taken reasonable steps to identify the possibility of abuse and prevent abuse from happening. We spoke to three nurses and four care staff. They were all aware of what abuse was and who to report any allegations or suspected abuse to. There were copies of the safeguarding vulnerable adult's policy on every floor and posters reminding people of the various types of abuse were displayed on notice boards. All the staff had recently attended safeguarding training updates via electronic means. Their understanding was then tested verbally at the end of the sessions.

During a routine inspection

We spoke to seven people who used the service and two relatives. People told us that they had positive experiences at Daken House. One person said 'we all get along here'. Others felt they were involved in their care and chose what they wanted to do. One person said they liked the staff and said they 'attend the church service every fortnight'. Another person said they ordered their favourite food from a local take away when they wanted. Most of the people we spoke to said staff were very caring.
