During a routine inspection

People told us they liked living at Thurn Court. One person said, 'I love it here. Everyone is so kind to me. It's such a wonderful place.' Another person said, 'This is a most happy home.'

People said they made choices about their care, activities, and meals. One person told us, 'I go to bed at 8pm which is my choice and the staff help me. They bring a hoist to help me get into bed.' Another person told us, 'What I like about it here is that the staff leave me to do my own thing and they don't interfere unless I ask them to. I'm an independent person so that suits me.'

People told us they liked the food and had a choice of dishes at mealtimes. One person said, 'The food is very good. The cook comes to the residents meetings so we can ask for what we want. Someone asked for black pudding for breakfast and they got it. I asked for thick gravy and they always make it like that for me now.' Another person commented, 'The food is very nice and the meals different every day. I think the cook does a good job.'

People said they found the staff caring and approachable. One person told us, 'The staff are excellent ' polite, helpful and kind. They do so many things for me. I even have my own carer who does my shopping. She's a godsend.' Another commented, 'We have a lot of fun with the staff. They're great friends to us.'

During a routine inspection

People told us they made choices about their care, activities, and meals. One person said, 'We do what we want when we want. Some things are fixed ' like mealtimes ' which you would expect, but otherwise it's up to us.' Another commented, 'If I need assistance with a bath or shower I say what I want and the staff help me.'

They told us they liked living at Thurn Court and thought the care was good. One person said, 'The staff know us individually and they know what we need.' Another commented, 'The staff clean my nails and put polish on them. They like us to look nice.'

People said there was a lot to do at the home and they enjoyed the surroundings. One person told us, 'We play skittles and bingo, do crafts, and go on trips out if we want to. And the home library service is excellent.' Another commented, 'My first love here is the garden ' the cherry tree is magnificent.'

They said they felt safe in the home and knew who to go to if they had any concerns. One person said, 'If there's a problem I go to the deputy manager ' she's good at sorting things out.' Another commented, 'I can't imagine anyone being badly treated here. The staff are so kind and you can talk to them about anything.'

People told us they liked the staff. One person said, 'Ever single member of staff here should have their names put on the New Year's Honours List.' Another told us, 'The staff here work extra hard ' they are wonderful.'

Relationships between the people who use the service and the staff were good. Staff were observed socialising with people, helping them at lunchtime, and doing activities with them. One person commented, 'The staff are nice and easy to get on with.'

People said the home was well-run and staff and management were approachable and easy to talk to. One person told us, 'I would say this home is well run. It's what you'd expect as it's a council home and no-one's making a profit out of it.' Another commented, 'This seems a good home and we are well looked after.'
