All Inspections

During a routine inspection

At the time of our visit there were ten people using the service. We spoke with three people who told us they were satisfied with the care and support being provided. People, who were able to, told us their choices were respected. Comments included: 'there's good Indian food', 'everybody is very nice' and 'we can go to the temple'.

We found that people's cultural and religious needs were respected. The home provided culturally appropriate meals. We saw that the staff group were representative of the culture and background of people living at the service and most staff were able to communicate with people in their first language. People also had the opportunity to visit the temple and celebrate religious festivals.

We looked at the records of three people who used the service and found support plans were detailed and thorough and provided clear guidance to staff about how the persons' care should be delivered. Our observations showed that staff had a good rapport with people and were attentive to their needs.

Staff had been appropriately screened to ensure they were suitable to work with vulnerable people.

There were appropriate arrangements were in place for the obtaining, recording and administration of medicine.

Records were accurate and fit for purpose.

We found that the service was compliant with the essential standards of quality and safety that we inspected.

During a routine inspection

People who use the service were supported in promoting their independence and community involvement. We spoke with a relative who was visiting the home at the time of our inspection. They told us their family member was very well looked after and that she was satisfied with the care being provided. People said they were comfortable raising concerns with the carers or managers. During brief observations we noticed that people seemed confident and happy with staff.

People we spoke with told us staff were kind and helpful. One person said staff were polite and "know what I like and what I don't like". During our visit we observed staff interacting with people and found they were kind and respectful at all times. We observed that staff had a good rapport with people using the service.

We found that the provider was meeting all of the essential standards of quality and safety that we inspected.

During an inspection in response to concerns

An expert by experience accompanied us on our visit to this service. This is a person who has personal experience of using, or caring for someone who uses a health or social care service.

The expert by experience found that people at Herrick Lodge and their relatives were satisfied with the care and support provided. They noted that the service accommodated a culturally-diverse service user group including those from Muslim, Hindu, and Irish backgrounds.

The home provided various weekly activities, and also shared activities with people who used an adjoining day centre managed by the same authority. Activities included visits to faith centres, entertainment, and games. People could watch Asian, UK, and other television channels in the lounges.

The expert by experience talked with six people who use the service. They told him they were happy living in the home and enjoyed the activities that took place. A relative said they visited often and were pleased with the service provided. People also said they liked the staff team who they said looked after them well. And they thought the acting manager was doing a good job and had improved the quality of care at the home.
