All Inspections

2 September 2013

During a routine inspection

At the time of our inspection there were 19 people using the service at Elizabeth House. Eight of these were long stay with the remainder on shorter stays for periods of respite or assessment.

We met a number of people using the service at Elizabeth House and spoke in detail with five of these and with one visiting relative. We also spoke with one visiting health professional who provided regular support to the home.

People were offered choices about the food that they ate and their views were listened to when menus were planned. People were satisfied with the meals provided at Elizabeth House. One person told us, 'I eat very well here, the food is very good.'

Medication was stored safely and people received their medicines in a reliable way.

When new staff were appointed a formal recruitment process was followed. Appropriate checks were carried out before new staff started work.

Staff received support, including appropriate training, to help ensure that they had the skills and knowledge they needed to carry out their roles.

People had the opportunity to share their views about the quality of the service. The provider listened to their comments and acted on these.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Following our previous inspection in November 2012 we asked the provider to make improvements. This because some people using the service did not have adequate assessments in place and people's nutritional needs were not being assessed to help

When we carried out this follow up inspection we found the provider had taken action. People using the assessment unit had adequate assessments in place which gave information about their individual care and support needs. A malnutrition screening tool had been implemented across the home to ensure that people's nutritional needs were assessed and any risks identified.

29 November 2012

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we met a number of people using the service. We spoke in detail with three of these people and with one relative who was visiting the home.

The people we spoke with were satisfied with the care and support they received at Elizabeth House. They felt that staff treated them well and showed kindness towards them. When people requested support staff were readily available and responded promptly.

An ongoing programme of refurbishment was underway when we visited the home. Significant improvements had already been made to make the environment more homely and comfortable. Further work was planned.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People said the care the home provided was good and they liked living at Elizabeth House. One person said, 'This is one of the best homes in Leicester. The carers are keen to look after us well and they work hard.' Another told us, 'I had a few falls so I came here to get myself sorted. I'm doing well and I hope to be going home soon.'

They told us they felt safe in the home and knew who to go to if they had any concerns. One person said, 'If anything was wrong I'd go to the manager.' A relative told us, 'I have total confidence in the manager of this home. If there was the slightest thing wrong I would speak to her straight away and ask her to put it right.'

People said staff treated them with dignity. One person said, 'I trust the staff completely.' A relative said, "The staff are respectful and polite. They never get cross, even when a resident gets angry, they just do their best to calm them down.' Although we acknowledge that people were positive about the staff team we did witness an interaction between a staff member and a person suffering from dementia that concerned us.

We observed that people suffering from dementia were encouraged to make choices about what they ate, where they sat, and whether or not they wanted to take part in activities. They were supported by staff to involve themselves in the life of the home and appeared comfortable there and able to find their way around.
