During an inspection looking at part of the service

Anna Victoria had been through a period of continued change since our last inspection in April 2012. Two managers had left in the preceding twelve months. An experienced interim manager within the company had taken over just prior to this inspection. As part of the inspection we checked on standards that were not met at our last inspection. These related to care management, care records and training. At this inspection we found that care management still needed some improvement. Staff were not receiving the training and supervision they needed to enable them to provide optimal care. Staffing was not at a consistent level and did not always match the high dependency of people living in the home. Quality assurance systems within the service needed further development.

During our inspection we spoke with three people living in the home and with three relatives who were visiting at the time of our inspection. People living in the home were very complimentary about the staff. One told us: 'The staff are good. They're always helpful.' A relative was very complimentary about the improvement the person they visited had made since admission to the home. However, they considered that there were not always sufficient staff. Another relative said that they could visit at any time and were always made to feel very welcome. They described the staff as 'wonderful' and 'very caring' and said that the home provided 'proper home cooked food'.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

As part of our inspection of Anna Victoria Nursing Home we had conversations of various lengths with three people living in the home and one relative, who was visiting at the time of our inspection. We also spoke with one relative prior to our inspection. People and one relative we spoke with during our inspection were very complimentary about care provided in the home. One person described the staff as 'warm, welcoming and ever so helpful' and added, 'they treat us with kindness and give me care in the way that I like'. Another person told us 'The care is good, the food is marvellous and the staff are kind. The manager is very good and supportive. I don't think you could better it.' However, two relatives considered that communication about health concerns needed to be improved.

5 December 2011

During a routine inspection

We carried out an unannounced inspection of Anna Victoria Nursing Home on 05 December 2011. We had conversations of various lengths with four people living in the home and with four relatives who were visiting at the time of our inspection. All the people and their relatives were very complimentary about the 'caring' and 'supportive' staff. One relative described the home as having 'exceptional service and care'. Another relative said 'You couldn't wish for better staff.' One person told us that staff provided care in the way that they liked and respected their preferences and choices. They told us 'They even get my favourite smoked salmon when I want it.' People were complimentary about the quality of the food and choices on the menu and the cleanliness of the home.

However, two relatives told us that overall staffing levels had been cut since the takeover of the home by Pilgrims' Friend Society in April 2011. They said that staff were often not replaced if they were off sick and considered that sometimes the home was 'short staffed'. They felt that at times this impacted on staff supervision of people in the home and on some aspects of care. However, one person said 'Staff are very good, they're always there when you need them.'
