During an inspection looking at part of the service

We looked at people's care records and medicine administration records (MAR). We found people's MAR were accurately completed. People had plans of care detailing information regarding their medicines and the support required to ensure medicines were adminstered safely and effecively.

We spoke with eight staff. Staff said they worked well as team and were a support to each other. We saw staff had received supervision every two months in line with the provider's recommendations and had an annual performance appraisal.

Each member of staff had a personal development plan to enable them to achieve the necessary knowledge and skills to support people effectively and with care.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

This inspection was to follow up on shortfalls we identified in our previous inspection in relation to the care people received. Whilst we were there we looked at other outcomes as part of our routine inspection work.

There were 31 people living in the home. We spoke with three people who used the service. They told us staff met their personal care needs. One person we spoke with said 'they help me with anything I want. They've always done what I want.' The staff we observed were patient and caring.

People told us they were usually involved in decisions about their daily care needs. The manager had made appropriate referrals to the relevant authorities when they were had concerns about a person's safety and wellbeing.

People's records were regularly updated and included enough information for staff to assist people with their care needs.

We found people's medicines records had not been accurately completed. We were told of two examples when medicines had not been administered safely.

Staff we spoke with told us they felt supported. We saw from the training matrix staff were up to date with training in essential areas of care. Staff had not received supervision in line with the provider's policy.

9 November 2012

During a routine inspection

We talked with five people who used the service. People told us they could get up when they wanted and go out when it suited them.

Staff told us they involved people in decisions about their care by asking them what they would like each time care was provided. We observed people had their privacy maintained and were addressed in a respectful way.

People we spoke with told us "care could not be faulted". We saw staff knew about the people they cared for.

People told us they knew how to report concerns about their care. Staff were knowledgeable about how to recognise and report abuse.

People told us call bells were not always answered promptly. Staff told us staffing levels were improving. We saw overall the providers recommended staffing levels were being achieved.

The provider had a system in place to monitor the quality of the service however aspects of the providers routine audit programme had not been carried out since 2011.

We observed care was not always delivered in line with care plans and people were not assessed and monitored to meet their needs

24 June 2011

During an inspection in response to concerns

We had received information from a concerned member of the public. They told us that some people did not receive prompt support from staff when they called for assistance. They said that some people were not liked by staff so they were left to wait. Sometimes people's continence needs were not met and urgent calls for assistance did not receive an urgent response.

People living at Amesbury Abbey told us that the staff were caring and kind. Most people said that staff responded promptly when they used their call bells, although one person said that they sometimes had to wait a long time.
