During a routine inspection

We were introduced to all of the people who were using the service and spoke with three relatives. We were told that the service had promoted the care and welfare of people who were living in the home. We were told that when concerns had been shared the service had taken notice and had acted upon these. We were told the service provides a, 'happy home'.

We were told that people who were using the service had benefited from good dietary provision. We found that the dietary needs and preferences of people who were using the service had been met.

We were told that the home had been kept, 'very clean'. We found that the service had made suitable arrangements and had taken appropriate action to make sure standards of cleanliness and hygiene had been maintained.

We found that staff had been supported to carry out their roles. We found that staff had benefited from supervision and appraisal. We found that staff had the opportunity and had been encouraged to attend training to develop their professional skills, knowledge and competence.

We found that the service had kept personalised care, treatment and support records secure and confidential for each person who was using the service. We found that other records required had also been maintained and held securely.

During a routine inspection

Whilst we were able to speak with one resident in some detail, and had short discussions with others, we were not able to carry out formal interviews with any of the residents at this home. Therefore we also made some observations using the Short Observational Framework for Inspections (SOFI). This involved sitting with residents and observing how they were being cared for, and how staff interacted with them. We did this for 1.5 hours during our visit.

We were told by the person we spoke to in detail, and we also observed, that people who lived at the service were treated respectfully by staff, and had their privacy and dignity maintained. We were told this was a 'Nice place to live.' We also noted there was a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Residents were encouraged to be involved in their care plans and one person went through their care plan with us and highlighted photographs related to their preferred activities and lifestyle choices. This person added 'I like living here.'

Residents were kept safe and were observed to be comfortable in the presence of staff. We noted very positive staff and resident interactions during our visit. We also noted that staff were knowledgeable on the needs of individual residents, and supported them in a sensitive way, which encouraged people's independence.
