During a routine inspection

Colebrook Respite Unit offers respite care for older people who are affected by dementia. At the time of our visit there were two people staying there who had been discharged from hospital but were not well enough to go home. There were also two people who were receiving respite care from home. A day care centre was also managed from the premises. During our visit we talked to people as they participated in activities. We also spoke with a visitor, three staff members and the manager of the centre.

Prior to people being accepted for respite care, a comprehensive assessment was completed from which a care support plan was developed. We saw where people had identified health needs, there was information in their records about their condition and the problems they could present.

A person visiting a friend on the unit told us, "X is fine and does look well. I think it is lovely."

We checked the management of medicines and saw people received their medication as prescribed.

During our visit we observed staff spending time with people both individually and in small groups. Records confirmed staff received regular and relevant training. Staff spoke positively about the support they received from the management team.

We saw any complaints were fully investigated and dealt with appropriately.

During a routine inspection

We visited without letting anyone know in advance we were going. We spoke with three people who used the care service. In spite of their diagnosis of dementia all three were able to give, either verbally, or by their demeanour, a good indication of their well being and satisfaction with the service.

“Treated well” and “No qualms about food” were comments from one person. Another told us “They’re pretty good here.” One person gave us lots of smiles and indicated they were very comfortable with the member of staff helping them.

People were clean, well groomed and at ease during our visit. Staff had a good rapport with the people they were supporting, spoke fondly of them and interacted with them in a relaxed and easy manner. Staff showed warmth and empathy in one to one interactions with people. The unit was clean, well-maintained and was sufficiently spacious for people to socialise or be on their own if they so wished.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

Colebrook Respite Unit and Colebrook Day Centre operate from the same site. People using the respite service generally attend the day centre during their stay at Colebrook Respite Unit.

The people at using the respite service were not able to tell us about the care they received due to their conditions such as short term memory loss and dementia. We spoke to the relatives of three people who used the service. They all told us that they were happy with the care provided at the Colebrook Respite Unit. They were able to have a break without any worries. They told us that they had been asked to provide information about people's care needs.

One person told us that they were happy with the care being provided. They also told us that the way in which they had been told that the person would not longer be able to access the respite service could have been better handled.

We spoke to care workers who told us that they liked working at Colebrook Respite Unit and felt supported by the management team. They said they had no concerns about the way the service was being run.
