During a routine inspection

We visited Ashley House on12 December 2013 and found the home to warm, clean and comfortable. Staff and people who used the service were preparing for the Christmas festivities.

We were told most people were up and we saw they were sat in the lounges. People had been served breakfast and were seen watching television in one of the lounges or the radio was on in the other lounge if they preferred. People who used the service were seen to be well presented and we heard staff interacting with them in a polite and friendly manner and respecting their dignity and privacy.

We spoke with people who used the service who told us, 'The staff are magic, they are very caring'. Another told us,' I am very comfortable here. I couldn't manage without them (the staff)'.

We looked at two care records and saw they contained relevant medical and health information, personal preferences and a social history. There was evidence of working with other professionals, risk assessments and monitoring charts were seen.

We saw a selection of compliment cards from relatives. Some of the comments included: 'Thank you for all you do but especially for your kindnesses'. And 'Thank you for all you do and for the lovely caring way you do it'.

Staff we spoke with told us, 'I have worked here for 13 years; it's like one big family'. Another said 'I have been here for 7 years it's a lovely place to work'.

During a routine inspection

People told us they were involved in planning their care and support and they were supported to make choices and decisions about matters which affected them.

People had no concerns about their care, treatment and support; they said they felt safe with the staff.

They told us they were treated with dignity and their privacy was respected. They said they were encouraged to be as independent as possible and that the care they received was very good.

They knew about their care plans which explained to care workers what they needed to do to support them and to help meet their needs.

People said they were being consulted about the service and were always asked what their needs were.
