During a routine inspection

There were twenty five residents at the home when we visited. Two were currently in hospital.

There were three care staff, and a team leader, on duty. In addition, there were kitchen, cleaning and laundry staff, as well as the manager, on duty during our visit.

We spoke with a visiting health professional, two relatives, and with three residents at length, as well as having brief conversations with around ten other residents.

People said they were very happy at the home, singling out the staff for praise. Comments included 'Nothing to moan about here' and 'the staff are smashing'.

We saw warm, relaxed interactions between staff and residents, and observed a busy, friendly home. One resident pottered in the garden planting flowers, and taking great pride in what he was doing. Another enjoyed helping with minor cleaning chores. Others positioned themselves in chairs so as to be in the midst of activities.

Recently completed building extensions have given people living at the home a choice of lounges, and a much larger dining room, as well as better equipped and larger bedrooms.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with a number of residents. The overwhelming majority were very positive about the home, praising, in particular, the staff and activities. People were pleased to be able to go to local shops, and on trips further afield.

Two regular visitors were spoken with, and both had nothing but praise for the home, both in general terms, and in terms of specific care. One commented 'I often come at different times, and the staff are always welcoming, and they are always looking after people well.' The other said they would report anything that concerned them, but only saw good, and people who were well looked after.

One person remarked that staff were 'fair to middling' but all other comments by residents were unstinting in their praise: 'staff work very hard', 'staff are smashing'

'they are always quick to help' were typical comments.

Other comments were:

'Here you can go where you want'there's always something to do'

'It's wonderful here'

'This is easily the best home I've been in, and that's why I chose to stop here'

'It's all very good here'

In addition to what people said, it was apparent from interactions between staff and residents, and between residents, and in the general 'atmosphere' of the home, that this was a relaxed, easy-going environment, where people were confident their needs would be met in a manner that they were comfortable with.
