People should be cared for by staff who are properly qualified and able to do their job (outcome 12)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Are safe and their health and welfare needs are met by staff who are fit, appropriately qualified and are physically and mentally able to do their job.

How this check was done

We reviewed all the information we hold about this provider, carried out a visit on 17/05/2012, observed how people were being cared for, talked to staff and talked to people who use services.

Our judgement

People were cared for and supported by appropriately recruited staff. The provider took the necessary steps in its recruitment process to ensure the appropriate checks were completed before people started work.

The provider was meeting this standard.

User experience

We observed two people who used the service.

People greeted new staff when they started their shift. This was very positive with the new member of staff explaining why they were there and early.

Other evidence

We looked at the personnel files for four members of staff. Each person had started work in the home after the return of a satisfactory Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

We could see from information in the personnel files that there was a process of undertaking the necessary recruitment checks. For example an application had been completed, followed by a face to face interview and references were sought from previous employers.
