People received appropriate care and had mental capacity assessments and were appropriate best interests decisions were being made on their behalf.

We found evidence that medication was stored safely and appropriately and administration of medication was recorded accurately.

Records within the home were regularly updated and older records archived appropriately.

Staff are well supported by the service and had relevant training and development.

17 May 2012

During a routine inspection

We visited the service unannounced on 17 May 2012. People who used the service were not able to communicate verbally. We used the Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI). SOFI is a specific way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk to us. We looked at records and spoke with staff.

Staff used signs to ask people what they wanted for lunch. Staff were respectful and supportive in enabling people to participate in activities during our visit.

People were asked what they wanted to drink and where they would like to sit. People were encouraged to use all areas of the home. For example one person was sitting in the conservatory and chose to move to the dining table to eat their mid morning snack.

People were comfortable with staff and seemed relaxed in their company. Staff spoke with people respectfully.

People greeted new staff when they started their shift. This was very positive, with the new member of staff explaining why they were there and early on shift.

Staff checked with people, each time they suggested an activity, that they were happy with it. They also suggested another activity if they indicated they did not like the idea put forward.
