All Inspections

During a routine inspection

We spoke to social services to ask for their views on the service provided by the home. Social services told they have been working jointly with the home to improve aspects of its operation. This has included regular visits to the home. Social services told us they did not have any current concerns about the safety and welfare of people living at the home.

We also spoke to two relatives of two people living at the home. Both relatives told us the home has looked after people well. Comment was made by one relative that the home was relaxed and people have been able to express themselves. Another relative told us the providers have a good understanding of people's needs.

Due to people's needs we were not able to speak to them to check their views on the service they received. We used our SOFI (Short Observational Framework for Inspection) tool to help us see what people's experiences at were. The SOFI tool allows us to spend time watching what is going on in a service and helps us to record how people

spend their time and whether they have positive experiences. This includes looking at the

support that is given to them by the staff. We spent two periods of 15 minutes each, observing people in the living room and at the early evening meal. We found that people had positive experiences. The staff supporting them knew what support they needed. Staff were observed assisting people in a calm and polite manner.

During an inspection in response to concerns

People who lived at Kinoo had complex needs and were not able to tell us what they thought about the care and support provided. We spent time in their company in the dining room and lounge observing the support they received. We saw that staff were friendly and respectful and that they were quick to respond if anyone appeared unhappy or distressed.

On the day of our visit there were five people living at the home, we spoke briefly with two people with limited response before they left with staff to pursue activities outside of the home. They indicated by their behaviour, smiles and nods that they were happy with what was happening at the time. The three other people using the service had already left for the day.

The care home is a family run service and only six staff work there, five family members and one member of care staff. We spoke with the provider and the manager during our inspection.

The service is currently being assisted in offering care to the people who live there and we spoke with a member of staff from an agency.

During a routine inspection

Due to the nature of people's disabilities we could not easily communicate with the people who live in Kinoo Lodge.

However we used our SOFI (Short Observational Framework for Inspection) tool to help us see what people's experiences of living in the home were. The SOFI tool allows us to spend time watching what is going on in a service and helps us to record how people spend their time and whether they have positive experiences. This includes looking at the support that is given to them by the staff.

We spent 20 minutes watching during the afternoon and found that overall people had positive experiences. People sat watching television and interacting positively with each other. Everyone appeared happy and relaxed.

We also spoke with health care professionals who visit the home regularly. They told us that they had no concerns about the care and treatment of the people who live in Kinoo Lodge
