During a routine inspection

The Old Vicarage was a well run and attractive environment for older people. The home supported people to remain active and independent, and a full programme of activities was provided. People told us they were able to make choices in relation to their care and that these were respected. People we spoke with felt in charge of their physical conditions and respected the knowledge and skills of the staff to support them.

People told us 'It's not a care home, it's where I live. If I need any help then they help me. There aren't many places like this in the country I am sure' and 'They are all lovely. I am settling well and have everything I need. I am independent and want to keep so ' but I do like having cups of tea on tap!'

We saw that people received a balanced diet, with fresh fruit and vegetables many of which were grown in the home's gardens. People told us they felt safe and the home had systems in place to protect people from abuse. There were sufficient numbers of staff on duty to ensure that people received individual attention. Staff understood people's needs well.

We found that although the home had a comprehensive policy and procedure manual in place many of the policies were out of date or needed revision.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with nine people who live at the Old Vicarage. One person told us that 'I love it here; I can choose exactly what I do each day, sometimes I write letters, on other days I play scrabble'. People also told us that 'I like to have breakfast in my bedroom and come down for lunch'. Another person told us 'If there is anything we want we just have to ask'. This showed us that people's wishes and preferences were listened to and action taken to meet their requests.

We saw four care files and found that people experienced safe and effective care based on detailed care plans and risk assessments.

We spoke with three staff, saw training records, spoke with the manager and found that staff received appropriate professional development.

We saw surveys and spoke with people who lived at the Old Vicarage and found that people who use the service, their representatives and staff were asked for their views about their care and treatment and they were acted on.

We saw the medication system which had clear procedures for monitoring, administering, recording, disposal and storage of medication.
