All Inspections

During a routine inspection

At the time of our visit there were nine people living at Harefield House. We spoke with four people using the service. People told us that they were happy living at Harefield House. One person told us "I am happy here, I would not want to leave". Another person told us "The staff are very kind".

We found that people were respected and their dignity maintained by staff. We found that staff supported people using the service with their physical and social care needs.

The provider had a safeguarding policy and procedures for staff and people using the service. Staff were aware of the signs of abuse and the procedure to follow in response to an allegation of abuse.

The building was appropriate for the needs of people using the service. The home was clean, well decorated throughout, there were areas within the home that people could use with others and visitors.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with four people using the service, the care staff on duty and the manager.

People using the service praised the service, manager and carers. They told us, "It's very good care here. They look after us well"; "I'm very lucky to be living here", "It's great, it's lovely - I wouldn't go anywhere else" and "If I need anything I tell them and they get it for me."

We observed that people were treated with care and consideration. The carers supported people at a pace that was comfortable for them. The staff asked for people's consent and acted in accordance with their wishes. We observed that staff offered options, and people gave their verbal consent before they received care and support. People were treated with dignity and respect.

People we spoke with all told us that they felt their rooms and the communal areas were clean. All the areas of the home we inspected were clean and tidy, and free from unpleasant odours.

Records were suitably maintained and fit for purpose.

During a routine inspection

Some people we spoke with who used the service said they knew there was a care plan for them, and that we could examine it if we needed to as part of the inspection. Two visiting relatives also said that they had been asked by the home about their relatives care needs and that they knew there was a care plan for staff to follow. Some people were not aware of what we meant by a care plan, but said that the staff did speak with them about their care needs regularly. They said they were very satisfied with their care, and the way that they were treated by staff. All said that they felt safe in the home.

One person told us that there was always a good variety of food on offer and, if she didn't like something that had been cooked, she wasn't given it again.

Overall, the feedback we received from people who lived at the home was very complimentary about the way staff respected their rights and encouraged them to get involved in the running of their home. They said the staff knew what care was needed and they do things the way people who used the service wanted them to.

People told us staff always enabled them to say what they felt and respected their privacy and dignity. They said that staff knew what they are doing and that they feel safe in the home. We observed staff to be respectful when speaking with people. People told us that the food was good and that they were asked about activities they would like to do, such as going out to the shops and church visits.
