During a routine inspection

We spoke with three relatives of people who used the service. They all told us they were happy with the home. One person told us that they were 'very happy with the care my mum receives'. Another person told us 'The staff are all very kind, they look after mum very well'.

We found that people who used the service had been assessed for their needs and care plans had been written and followed. We found that the staff had been appropriately recruited and had a good understanding of the safeguarding of vulnerable adults.

We found concerns over the management of the medicines and the home's ability to monitor the management of the medicines.

During a routine inspection

We used a number of different methods to help us understand the experiences of people using the service, because the people using the service had complex needs which meant they were not able to tell us their experiences.

We spoke to a relative of one person who said the staff were 'absolutely marvellous', they made them feel welcome, and looked after their relative very well. They told us that staff had explained the plan of care to them and the reasons for the treatment.

During a routine inspection

As most of the people in the home have dementia, with associated communication problems, we only spoke with two people. We also spoke with three relatives about their views of the care provided.

People and their relatives we spoke with praised the service: ''Staff are very good.' 'If I have something bothering me I go to the manager and she sorts it out. Staff are friendly ' 'its nice here. I have been here a long time and it's my home.'

There were a number of suggestions that we received :

Decor was seen as tired and needed to be refreshed.

Easy chairs were seen as old and needed to be replaced.

Curtains were not matched and needed to be replaced.

Staff turnover was seen as high. The explanation put forward for this was because students were employed who did not stay long, and staff wages were at the minimum wage level.

We received comments about some staff could not be understood due to their accents or their grasp of English language was not of a satisfactory standard.

The provider said that he would look into and follow up these comments.
