During a routine inspection

The people that lived at Merok House had dementia and therefore not everyone was able to tell us about their experiences. To help us to understand the experiences people had we spent time observing what was going on in the home, how people spent their time, the support they received from staff and whether they had positive outcomes.

From our observations we found that overall people had positive experiences. The staff assisting them knew what support they needed and were seen speaking to people in a kind and respectful way.

Four people who we were able to have a conversation with, said they were happy with the care they received. For example one person said, 'I'm happy here. You get good choices'.

Two of the four people said that sometimes staff were abrupt. For example one person said, 'Some staff are ok, some talk sharp when they are busy'. However other evidence did not support this.

We also gathered evidence of peoples' experiences of the service by reviewing questionnaires that had been completed by relatives and healthcare professionals in January 2012. We found that no one reported any concerns of poor care.

The people that lived at Merok House had dementia and therefore not everyone was able to tell us about their experiences. To help us to understand the experiences people had we spent time observing what was going on in the home, how people spent their time, the support they received from staff and whether they had positive outcomes.

We spent an hour watching people in the lounge and dining room and found that overall people had positive experiences. The staff assisting them knew what support they needed and they respected their wishes if they wanted to manage on their own.

All people who we were able to have a conversation with, said they were happy with the staff and the care they received.
