All Inspections

20 May 2013

During a routine inspection

We carried out this inspection to check on the care and welfare of people using the service. The inspection was unannounced which meant the provider and the staff did not know we were coming. We wanted to see what life was like for people who were living at Oaston Lodge.

People who used the service had limited or no verbal communication. We made observations and spoke with one person who used the service. We also spoke with the manager and two staff members to gain feedback about the service and care and support provided. We looked at some of the records kept to support staff in providing the correct care to people who use the service.

The atmosphere was relaxed and calm with plenty of interaction between individuals and staff. We saw that people were offered choices and were able to make their wishes and preferences known. People confirmed that they 'liked living' at the home and they 'liked all the staff.'

We observed that staff responded promptly to people when they asked for, or indicated they needed support. We saw that staff treated people with respect whilst providing care.

We found that care records were reviewed on a regular basis to make sure they accurately described the care people needed.

We looked at the way medicines were being stored and administered to make sure people received their medication in a planned and safe way.

People were supported by staff recruited who were suitable and qualified to work with vulnerable people.

3 August 2012

During a routine inspection

We visited this service on 3 August 2012. The visit was unannounced so that no one who worked for or used the service knew we were coming. We carried out this inspection to check on the care and welfare of people using this service.

During our visit we spoke with two people using the service, the support staff on duty, the manager and the provider.

Some of the people living in the home had complex needs which meant that they were not able to tell us their experiences. We spent time during our visit observing care to help us understand their experiences.

We observed positive relationships between people living in the home and the staff on

duty. We saw that people appeared comfortable and relaxed.

People had care plans in place that contained information to assist staff with meeting care and support needs.

Staff we spoke with knew about people's care and support needs and were able to tell us about them. We saw that personal care and support was provided in private.

Staff had recently completed training in safeguarding vulnerable adults from abuse and were able to talk through the processes to be followed should abuse be suspected.

We looked at how the service measured the quality of care and support provided.

We saw that the organisation carried out an annual survey to seek the views of the people using it. We saw the results for the survey undertaken in 2011 which indicated satisfaction with the service provided.

We saw that the health, safety and welfare of people living, working and visiting the home were monitored by appropriate checks and measures.
