During an inspection looking at part of the service

We did not visit the provider but reviewed the information sent to us by the provider. At our visit in August 2013 we identified the provider did not have an effective system in place to identify, assess and manage risks to the health, safety and welfare of people who used the service and others.

We have received evidence and confirmation the provider has now addressed our concerns. The provider has told us they have fitted a shower so that people have safe access to bathing facilities.

During a routine inspection

When we undertook a visit to Casterton House people who lived at the home told us they were happy with the care and support that they received.

During our visit on 01 August 2011 we met with the people who lived there and they told us that the staff supported them in the way they wished with one person saying, "I asked my friend to help me to choose this home and it was a good choice for me. I feel comfortable here. the staff bring me anything I ask for and take time to talk to me when I need it". Another person said, "I get on very well with the staff, its a family environment that suits my needs".

One person we spoke to who needed help with mobility needs said, "The manager makes sure I have the equipment I need to meet my needs".

We also checked to see if people felt safe living at the home and one person told us, "Its like a family home, its my home and I feel safe". Another person said, 'I feel safe here. They get me what I need and I dont like noisy places. This suits me fine".

We also spent some time observing how people were having their care needs met in a communal part of the home.

During this period of observation we saw staff communicating with people in a sensitive way and taking time to listen to what people were saying whilst taking any action needed to make sure people felt safe and supported.
