During a routine inspection

Care was planned and delivered in a way that promoted people's right and choices. People told us they felt involved in decisions about who supported them and when they wanted staff to assist with their care. People told us they liked to have the same person to assist with meeting their care needs. People we spoke with told us that they found the service very good. They said staff were friendly and mostly turned up when they were supposed to.

Staff received training in the control and prevention of infection. They were provided with equipment to prevent the risk of cross infection. Policies and procedures on infection control were available to staff.

The organisation had robust recruitment procedures and ensured staff received training to enable them to deliver care safely. Staff informed us how they were recruited and about their induction to Danum Homecare.

Complaints were investigated and responded to in a timely manner. People we spoke with confirmed they would contact the manager if they wanted to raise a concern.

4 July 2012

During a themed inspection looking at Domiciliary Care Services

We carried out a themed inspection looking at domiciliary care services. We asked people to tell us what it was like to receive services from Danum Homecare as part of a targeted inspection programme of domiciliary care agencies with particular regard to how people's dignity was upheld and how they make choices about their care. The inspection team was led by a CQC inspector joined by an Expert by Experience who has personal experience of using or caring for someone who uses this type of service.

We used postal surveys, telephone interviews and home visits to people who used the service and to their main carers (a relative or friends) to gain views about the service.

We were able to contact 23 people. People we spoke with made positive comments about the care and support they received from Danum Homecare. They told us that the care workers were friendly, treated them with respect and helped them maintain their dignity. They all said that the care workers always listen to them and took note of their suggestions as they carried out the care. People told us that care workers always asked for their consent before carrying out care.

Twenty people who used the service told us the care and support was planned with their help and they were able to make changes to their care plan as and when they needed. The others said their family contributed to the planning of their care. They said,' I can manage lots of things myself and I know what help I need and I get that from the care workers.' 'the care workers are wonderful they let me do as much as I am able to, so that I can keep living in my home.'

All the people we spoke with told us that they had no cause for concern when care workers were around. They said, 'I feel safe when the staff are with me.' 'I will not tolerate any bad behaviour from anybody. I will take my own action.'

Ten people told us that care workers worked in teams and they knew all the workers in the team and the team leader. Three people told us most of the time they had the same care workers and they only had different ones when they were on leave or off sick. They also said the care workers arrived at the pre-arranged time and stayed for the duration.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

People who use the service told us the care provided was 'absolutely marvellous', they were involved in writing their care plan, and staff recorded details of their care after each visit.

They said, 'The carers know exactly what is needed and they are always efficient in the way they conduct themselves'.

'I would award them with 5 stars'.

'The staff are very good; they do over and above what is required of them'.

People told us staff prompt and assist them to take their medication.

7 March 2011

During an inspection in response to concerns

People told us that they were mostly satisfied with the care provided. Some people said that there had been a number of changes to the staff. Two people told us they liked the carers who came. Two people said the care had improved since some staff had left the service. A relative told us that staff always turned up when they said they would be there and they telephoned if they were going to be late.

They said staff always turned up in their uniform and wore protective clothing when attending to personal care. People told us that staff were polite and courteous, and respected their rights and dignity. Most said the staff turned up on time and wore the correct uniform.

One person said they had raised a concern that staff smelt of smoke when they arrived and they found this offensive. They said they had raised a complaint and it had been better. One person said some staff seems to be rushing to get them in bed because they complained of being tired. One relative said they had complained about the attitude of some staff, but they did not come anymore. A relative told us that two staff used to turn up when her parent had only been assessed as needing one staff. They told us that they often turned up late and left before they should. They told us they had complained and it was better now.

Two people said the care had improved since some staff had left the service. People told us they were concerned that they were paying for four calls per day but the care records confirmed they were only receiving three calls a day.
