People should be cared for in a clean environment and protected from the risk of infection (outcome 8)

Meeting this standard

We checked that people who use this service

  • Providers of services comply with the requirements of regulation 12, with regard to the Code of Practice for health and adult social care on the prevention and control of infections and related guidance.

How this check was done

We looked at the personal care or treatment records of people who use the service, carried out a visit on 22 October 2013, observed how people were being cared for and checked how people were cared for at each stage of their treatment and care. We talked with people who use the service, talked with carers and / or family members, talked with staff and reviewed information given to us by the provider. We reviewed information sent to us by commissioners of services, reviewed information sent to us by other authorities, talked with commissioners of services and talked with other authorities.

Our judgement

People were cared for in a clean, hygienic environment.

Reasons for our judgement

During our inspection on 11 June 2013 we found that people were not cared for in a clean, hygienic environment. We found that there was no hot water for people to have showers or baths, staff to wash their hands effectively or clean the environment. The home was visibly dirty, stained and in a state of disrepair. During our inspection on 22 October 2013 we found that the home was clean and had no odour. We saw that the furniture was clean and there were facilities for staff to wash their hands. We spoke with five people; they all told us that they were able to have baths or showers now as there was hot water.

We looked at the room where the fridges were kept. The provider may wish to note that the floor in this room was sticky and had a puddle of water.
