During a routine inspection

We spoke with the provider, observed three consultations and spoke with three people who used the service.

We noted that the provider took steps to ensure that people were informed sufficiently regarding suggested vaccinations and preventive medications before making their decisions. This showed us that people were able to give informed consent to treatments and care.

The provider assessed people's needs prior to making a judgement about their required treatment and care. People we spoke with were positive about the service provided. One person said that the process was 'all good.' Another told us 'It was really friendly. The nurse is really nice.'

We noted that the provider's arrangements for medicines management had effective processes in place to protect people from the risk of receiving inappropriate or unsafe medications. The provider was registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. They also held other relevant qualifications and memberships of professional organisations including a diploma in travel medicine.

The provider's records were up to date and helped to protect the safety and well-being of people who used the service.

During a routine inspection

We did not receive any comments from people using this service in relation to this standard. However we reviewed the treatment review systems established by the provider and noted that the comments received were positive about the service.

We noted that each person had been made aware of the indications, contraindications and potential complications associated with their specific immunisation. This showed us that before people received any care or treatment they were asked for their informed consent and the provider acted in accordance with their wishes. Patient information leaflets (PIL) were available and these were noted to be clear and informative. Everyone who attended the service was given a "safer travelling" handbook to provide them with additional advice and guidance. This demonstrated to us that people experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights.

Each person was provided with an information sheet listing their immunisations to share with their GP. This showed us that the provider worked in co-operation with other primary health care services. The service had an anaphylaxis safety kit. This showed us that people were protected from the possible side effects of their immunisation episode. Periodic satisfaction surveys were carried out and any concerning comments received were addressed seriously by the service. This showed us that any comments and complaints people made were responded to appropriately.
