During a themed inspection looking at Dignity and Nutrition

People told us what it was like to live at this home and described how they were treated by staff and their involvement in making choices about their care. They also told us about the quality and choice of food and drink available. This was because this inspection was part of a themed inspection programme to assess whether older people living in care homes are treated with dignity and respect and whether their nutritional needs are met.

The inspection team was led by a CQC inspector joined by an 'expert by experience'. These are people who have experience of using the services and who can provide that perspective.

We conducted a Short Observational Framework for Inspection (SOFI 2). SOFI is a specific way of observing care to help us understand the experience of people who could not talk to us.

During our visit to The Manor on 4 October 2012 we spoke with people who told us they were happy living there and were well looked after. They said staff treated them with dignity and respect. One person said,' My room is lovely and I have my own bits and pieces in it'. People told us they were happy with the food. One person told us, 'The food is all home cooked and the cook makes their own cakes.'

During a routine inspection

'I like to be involved in things and to have my own space. I like talking books because I cannot see very well and they help me to listen to stories I would otherwise read. The staff made sure I can get these when I want them'.

'I wanted to vote in the recent election and they made sure they took me to do it. I was really pleased' and another person said 'my family live locally and I wanted to be near them so they could visit me whenever they wanted'.

'The manager speaks to me regularly about my needs and it's reassuring to know that they know how I like things to be'.

'I love the food here' and 'We can have what we want to eat' One person told us 'I like what they give me; I have never turned any food away it's presented well and it fills me up'.

'The carers know what I like. My key worker talks to me and they know me enough to know the sort of food I like and don't like'

'I feel very safe here. The manager is always around if we need anything and I have no worries about raising concerns when I need to' another person said, 'I can confide in the manager'.
